James Tracey Eye Care Presents Lumenis Optilight Intense Pulsed Light Therapy (IPL)

Lumenis Optilight Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy is a cutting-edge dry eye and stye treatment. It uses specific wavelengths of light to address dry eye symptoms by reducing swelling around the eyes, so that oil-producing meibomian glands can better lubricate them.

How Does Lumenis Optilight IPL Treatment Work?

Oil is an important part of producing a healthy tear film, since it prevents the tear from evaporating too quickly. This is why the most common cause of dry eye syndrome is a condition called Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).

This common condition occurs when the oil-producing meibomian glands get clogged, making it difficult or impossible for them to express the oil that is so essential for the tear film.

At James Tracey Eye Care, our Optilight IPL procedure liquefies and releases hardened oils that are clogging the meibomian glands in the eyelids. This reduces blockages that cause dry eye symptoms and improves the quality of your tears.

At our Woodcliff Lake eye clinic, your Optilight IPL treatment starts with our eye doctors placing shields over your eyes to keep them from discomfort or damage from the pulsing lights. A thin layer of cooling gel is then applied to the treatment area and the pulses of light are administered to the region around the eyelids. This begins to melt and dislodge oil build-up in the meibomian glands.

treating both chronic dry eye syndrome and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction

After administering Optilight IPL, our eye doctor will restore normal oil flow in the tear film by lightly pressing on the glands to express the oil within. Improvements are often seen after only one or two treatments, but we usually recommend monthly Optilight IPL treatments over a period of 4 months for best long-term results.

After Lumenis Optilight IPL Treatment

Experiencing blurred vision for the last several days after treatment? Don’t worry! This just means that your meibomian glands are expressing more oil than your eyes have grown used to. This should be the only possible side effect of IPL treatment, and no downtime is required. You can expect to be back to your daily activities right after the treatment.

How Is Lumenis Optilight IPL Different From Other Dry Eye Treatments?

Most standard dry eye treatments aim to address the symptoms of dry eye, not the root causes. This is the case with eye drops, artificial tears, hot compresses, and eyelid scrubs.

Optilight IPL, on the other hand, targets the source of your dry eye – the blood vessels surrounding the glands. This helps them successfully produce and secrete oils that are essential for a healthy tear film and well-moisturized eyes.

This not only relieves symptoms but also slows the progression of chronic dry eye.

What can I expect from the OptiLight treatment?

OptiLight dry eye treatment is applied on the skin below the eyes and is non-invasive.

  1. During treatment, your practitioner will cover your eyes with shields and apply a thin layer of coupling gel on the treatment area.
  2. You may experience a warm sensation as light is applied to the skin. The treatment is gentle with minimal discomfort.
  3. 4 sessions, spaced 2-4 weeks apart. Each session usually takes only 10-15 minutes.
  4. Patients usually report an improvement after the 2nd or 3rd session.
  5. You can return to your daily activities and apply makeup straight away in most cases.

FAQs

What is OptiLight?

OptiLight is a dry eye and stye treatment that uses precise, intense broad-spectrum light to treat dry eye disease brought on by meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). The treatment helps bring down swelling and inflammation, which are key underlying factors in MGD. OptiLight was specifically developed to reach the delicate contours of the treated area safely, effectively and gently.

What is the OPT™ technology?

Lumenis’ patented technology OPT™ (Optimal Pulse Technology) transforms the use of light and allows targeted, uniform, precise, and controlled treatment. Specifically designed for the delicate area below the eye, OPT™ safely and effectively breaks the vicious cycle of inflammation associated with dry eye.

How does OptiLight work?

OptiLight addresses dry eye disease by treating common sources of inflammation and swelling that lead to dry eye disease. These include demodex mites, abnormal blood vessels and pro-inflammatory agents. OptiLight restores the function of meibomian glands and delays evaporation of the tear film.
